Stock trading vs commodity trading: What’s the real difference?

In the dynamic world of financial markets, you have multiple investment options to choose from. Among the most common are stocks and commodities. Both can open doors to profits, but they stand apart in several areas. The nature of what you buy, the factors that influence price changes, and the strategies you use to trade are all quite different in these two markets.

For new and experienced traders alike, recognising these differences is important for building an effective approach. With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at how stock trading and commodity trading differ from each other.

Stock trading | What exactly are you buying?

When you engage in stock market trading, you buy and sell shares of publicly listed companies. Each share you acquire signifies a small piece of ownership in that company. This ownership often grants you voting rights and makes you eligible to get a portion of the company’s profits via dividends.

For stock trading, there are two primary exchanges:

  • Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)
  • National Stock Exchange (NSE)

Factors like the company’s financial performance, industry/sector trends, government policies, and broader economic conditions influence the value of stocks.

Commodity trading | What are you actually purchasing?

Commodity trading works differently. Instead of buying a part of a company, you deal in gold, silver, crude oil, copper, zinc, natural gas, agricultural products like wheat and cotton, and spices.

Two leading commodity exchanges of India are:

  • National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX)
  • Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX)

Commodity trading generally takes place in two major types of markets: the spot market and the derivatives market.

Stock market vs commodity trading | Key differences

Whether you are considering online trading in commodities or the stock market, grasping the major differences helps you make better decisions.

Aspect Stock trading Commodity trading
What you trade Shares of companies (ownership in businesses) Gold, silver, natural gas, copper, zinc, and agricultural products
Trading platform On stock exchanges like NSE and BSE On commodity exchanges like MCX and NCDEX
Type of contract Shares can be held for as long as you want Futures contracts, with expiry dates
Price influences Company earnings, management decisions, economic changes, industry performance, and investor sentiment Global events, geopolitical factors, supply-demand dynamics, and weather conditions
Volatility Varies, but blue-chip stocks tend to be more stable Usually higher, sharp price swings common
Ownership Partial ownership in a company No direct ownership of physical commodities. Trades are mostly speculative via futures contracts, not actual delivery

Market timings explained: Stocks vs commodities

Trading hours for commodities and stocks generally differ in India:

  • Stock market (NSE/BSE) hours are from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday.
  • The commodity market has two sessions: a morning session from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and an evening session from 5:00 PM to either 11:30 PM or 11:55 PM.

To wrap up

Choosing between commodity and stock trading depends on your interests, knowledge, and risk appetite. If you prefer trading based on market trends, company news, and technical indicators, stock trading might suit your style. On the other hand, if you’re more inclined to track global cues, geopolitical shifts, and commodity cycles, you may find commodity trading more dynamic. Many traders combine both in order to balance risk and opportunity.
